England vs Scotland, 4 February, at Murrayfield

Cold, windswept, cold, seat in the top of the stands and did I mention cold.  The cold was more down to windchill than actual temperature, but made my wife go an interesting blue colour.

The seats that we had were right up in the south-west corner of the stadium.  A good view of the pitch, but made taking photographs very hard.  For the first time using a Nikon D300 with 70-300mm lens instead of the Olympus Pen.

The comments from the sports photographers that I had looked at during the research stage of the course had emphasised that it was better to get the picture than worry about ISO and grain.

Looked to attain the best combination of settings to capture images:
  • Faster shutter speed to stop most of the action - set manually to 1/320th for most captures.  Would stop most action, but not all, to allow a small amount of movement to show.
  • Set to continuous for multiple exposures.
  • Aperture as wide as possible to let in as much light as possible and
  • ISO set as high as 1250
  • Shooting jpeg rather than RAW to allow faster record of the image.

F4.8, ISO800

M, 300mm, 1/320th,
F5.6, ISO1250

M, 110mm, 1/320th,
F4.5, ISO1000

The use of continuous exposures  provides a good opportunity to have a go at an action triptych, with a penalty kick making a good subject, especially as I am looking at body shapes for my theme.

The following images were at about the furthest part of the pitch from where we were sat - approx 120-130m.
